Our greatest wish came true about 10 minutes ago...both pediatrics, wound care and neurosurgery were all in the same room at one time!!! I can't tell you how novel it was. We are frustrated because they typically do their rounds separately which is fine unless they are giving you two completely different opinions.
Sunday we seemed to be on the road to recovery but then one spot at the base of his back began opening up. It went from being closed to the size of a pin to the size of a dime during the course of the day. We have pictures we won't post for the benefit of the faint hearted. We weren't sure if this was progress or not but it does not feel good to see a hole in his back.
Wound care feels strongly that the incision needs some intervention to clean it out. They have a few things they are suggesting. Mostly they want to put some stuff in the hole to draw out whatever is in there so that it can heal from the inside out. They are not comfortable with us being discharged for quite a while.
Neurosurgery came by and said it would all come on it's own and that we may be discharged soon and just switch to oral antibiotics.
After being all together they came up with a new way to bandage it that will hopefully help it heal properly. I am so nervous to take him home with a fairly large hole in his back and wait for it to heal but we'll see what decisions are made over the next day. Our biggest challenge will be keeping it clean, especially from poop.
It seems like this black hole is progress and we just hope it can heal on it's own in a reasonable amount of time. I'm a bit nervous! Jonas continues to put up with it so well and sits still while everyone pushes and prods at his wound.
His back looks different every 30 minutes or so but we'll do our best to update you with any major news. I look forward to being back together as a family in England! Thank you for your continued support and prayers, they mean so much to us.
The black hole sounds... disgusting. But I'm glad they're coming together (the doctors, not the black holes) and hopefully it will heal quick!
